Where Credit Is Due

I have been catching myself. I caught a friend, a good Yeshiva man, a rabbi, the other day too. As if hitting us with a bombshell, he told a bunch of us at the table, "Do you know who is dollar for dollar the biggest supporter of Torah education in history? The government of Israel, that's who."

I corrected him, cognizant that he's been as brainwashed as any of us. The brainwashing is to give the State of Israel credit for Hashem's work. The "Religious" Zionists have trained us for years in this way. I asked this rabbi if the government of Israel desires to support Torah education or if it needed the Charedi vote. He admitted the latter was the case and then proceeded on a much appreciated discussion of how intent is everything in determining whether what gets credit in such matters. Because his basic attitudes are correct Torah ones, he was able to catch himself and not let Religious Zionist sound bites take root in his soul.

But there's something else that deserves credit -- modern affluence brought on by technology. There's more money in the world than ever before, by a long shot. Poor men today often have more luxuries than kings of old. And global education is the policy of every country in the world as far as I know, certainly every Western one, the kind Israel professes to being. So Israel wants to educate its citizens -- and let us not fail to mention that mandated education is a way to control the masses. So along with its masses it schleps in the Torah people who by virtue of their voting block insist on Torah education of which actually they doesn't get very much funding compared to secular schools.

And what pays for all of this: modern affluence. And who produced modern affluence? Hashem, that's who.

You see it all over the world. Skycrapers in Poland. Shopping malls in Vietnam. The whole world is busting with materialism that a century ago, that half a century ago was unimagined. This also serves as a counter to the idea that the redemption has come to Israel because the desert is blossoming since the Jews took over from the Arabs. While the Jews have done more with the land arguably than Arabs would have, most of the blossoming is the kind that has gone on all over the world due to technology and modern affluence.

Hashem gets the credit. But we have been trained to thank the State of Israel for our running water and our city buses. In America, I used to thank Hashem for refrigeration. As Rabbi Avigdor Miller noted, the city ordinances that keep buildings safe in your city are from Hashem! He put the idea in men's heads.

Somehow in Israel, due I believe to brain washing from "Religious" Zionists, I have been thanking the State day and night. As if it were a god with godly powers, as if it can produce anything without Hashem.

The Sages tell us that Hashem goes with the Jews into exile. This helps explain the wealth the Jews enjoy all over the world -- in London, in South Africa, in Hong Kong, in Chicago. Even in the shtetls we tended to live better than the gentile neighbors. So if the economy prospers in the State of Israel, it is because Hashem goes into exile with the Jews. He blesses us wherever we are. It doesn't make the State of Israel the redemption but rather another golus, another foreign government under which Jews can prosper via blessings from Heaven.

The thought of "Religious Zionism" tends to cuts Hashem out of the picture. This notion of the State being an instrument of geulah has made a god of the State. And that is one of the things our gadolim warned us about when the idea of Zionism first reared its ugly head in the 19th century.

Hashem provides the water anywhere it flows whether it be Flagstaff, Arizona or Jerusalem. It is Hashem and only Hashem.

איכשהו בישראל, מכיוון שאני מאמין שטיפת מוח מציונים "דתיים", אני מודה למדינה יום ולילה. כאילו היה אלוהים עם כוחות אלוהי, כאילו הוא יכול לייצר משהו בלי השם.

השם מספק את המים בכל מקום שהוא זורם אם זה יהיה פלגסטאף, אריזונה או ירושלים. זה השם ורק השם.
