Jews Against Nationalism

So the book the Transformation criticizes the Agudah for absorbing Mizrachi organizational methods (Congresses, etc) and then Zionist notions such as moving to Israel as part of the redemption. I can testify that I have observed Zionism in the yeshivah world and been perplexed by it. On one hand, most yeshivish people will talk about not yielding "one iota" - famous phrase - to secular notions but then they seem to espouse Zionism, perhaps without realizing it. I'm not talking about the black hat wearers at Yeshiva University/RIETS. I'm talking about the regular yeshiva world.

My expectation when I came to Israel was that I'd never catch up with Israelis on knowledge of the country's history vis a vis the conflict with the Arabs. Being new to any subject, it takes time to get a grounding. On top of that, the history of the State of Israel, has to be more complex than most places even if the time period is way shorter. On top of that, it's a country full of Jews and aren't most Jews intelligent and informed? Well, I think it took me about a year and half to find that I caught up. That's not to say that it took me a year and a half to catch up. I believe I did that in a few weeks. I just didn't know it for a year and a half because it was at that time that I had spoken to enough Israelis that knew so little about anything that I felt safe in concluding that indeed they are as ignorant as sin over here.
