NBN needs to change the name of its “Buddy Family Program.” The wording suggests a service much more comprehensive than the reality. The word buddy suggests a meaningful relationship, emotional support, a knowledge of one another’s lives, and actual in person encounters, and the word family suggests that this relationship applies across the entire family, from family to family. They are warm and comforting words but they don’t match the reality which is a phone number where a person can ask occasional questions. The other option is to train buddy families how to reach out and how to provide a substantive service. As it stands now, the program doesn’t qualify as a program. It’s more of a phone list. And the entire enterprise is deceptive and disappointing.
We have had two "buddy families." The first made one quick call and told us that they couldn't meet us for a while because they had family staying with them. A few months later they sent an email but didn't respond to our reply. A few months later they sent another email but didn't respond to our reply. We asked for a replacement and got a family who also has never contacted us and proved to be difficult to do as much as bring back a copy of a homework assignment missed due to sickness.
It's not substantial I'm afraid, this so called buddy family service, like so many things today. Maybe not any worse than the rest of the world but one is lead to believe that in Israel life will be different. Actually, life becomes worse because you are dependent on these totally unhelpful phonies who equate tzidkus with living in the land. All other mitzvos go out the window.
